Bangkok's BEAM WONG AND FRIENDS Just Made Bandcamp Daily's Global Best-Of List

Bandcamp Daily's monthly best-of list doesn't usually have a Bangkok address on it. This month it does, next to entries from Bristol, Sofia, Kyiv and Bogota, and the record that got it there was inspired by a hillside in Japan and a 40-year-old Thai film about a woman who paints to forget she's dying.

The band is BEAM WONG AND FRIENDS, a four-piece built around Bangkok multimedia artist Beam Wong (also known by his given name Theerapat Wongpaisarnkit) with three collaborators credited only as Tim, Bill and Git. Their EP Flourishing on the Brink of Collapse went up on Bandcamp on August 26, six tracks, hand-scrawled cover art, no label. Two weeks later, Bandcamp Daily's editors put it on their best new electronic music of August roundup, the same list that carried releases from London, Chicago, Pretoria and Minneapolis that month. For a self-released Thai experimental act with a few thousand plays, that's real estate most Southeast Asian artists never get near.

What Bandcamp Daily Actually Said

The write-up doesn't hedge. "The sounds made by this team-up of four electronic producer friends from Bangkok feel improvised, and reactive," the piece reads, "like an instinctive reaction to stimuli... you might get a sense of IDM tropes in its juddering disjunctions and floating chords, perhaps a hint here and there of something on Planet Mu in the early '00s. But more often it feels like its whole own thing." That's a real comparison, not a courtesy one. Planet Mu is the label that put out Aphex Twin-adjacent, Chicago footwork and juke records for two decades; getting filed anywhere near it is not nothing.

The liner notes credit the EP's mood to "a trip to Mitake," a mountain town outside Tokyo, and to Behind the Painting, Piak Poster's 1985 adaptation of the Thai novel about a young woman's affair with an older aristocrat while she is dying, unspoken, of tuberculosis. The closing track, the ten-minute "Earthquake/River," was recorded live at a screening event at Goethe-Institut Thailand in May, a retrospective of a decade of Beam Wong's film and video work. None of that reads like a pitch deck. It reads like four people who make music because they were already going to make things.

The Sound, If You Haven't Heard It

BEAM WONG AND FRIENDS call their own genre "deconstructed club," which is generous shorthand for music that keeps club music's tension without ever giving you the drop. "Then Eat Shhh," a standalone track from May, is a decent preview: skittering, unresolved, closer to a nervous system than a beat. A Pattern, Not a Fluke

This isn't the first time in recent months a Southeast Asian bedroom act has beaten better-funded competition on Bandcamp's own turf. Indonesian composer Hajar Asyura topped Bandcamp's global techno chart in August while scoring horror films by day. Bangkok's own underground has been loud lately too: More Rice Records put out an EBM EP from DZ just last week. None of these acts have booking agents chasing festival slots. What they have is Bandcamp's algorithm-free, editor-picked pages, which keep turning out to be the one place where a four-person collective recording live at an art gallery in Bangkok gets read next to acts from Kyiv and Minneapolis on equal terms.
