Technics Sent Yousuke Yukimatsu 250 Metres Up Tokyo Tower to Mark 55 Years of the SL-1200

Two hundred and fifty metres above Tokyo, inside a mirrored crown room most tourists never get to see, Yousuke Yukimatsu cues up a 7-inch by hand. No laptop, no USB stick, just needles, cartridges and the entire city glowing under glass. Technics built the whole thing around that image on purpose. The room is Tokyo Tower's Top Deck, and today it's the set for a DJ performance made to mark 55 years of the turntable that put vinyl DJing on the map in the first place.

An All-Vinyl Set, Filmed on a Tower

The premise is simple and a little stubborn: no digital files, no controllerism, just Yukimatsu and a crate of records against a 360-degree view of Tokyo. Technics recorded the session with DOMMUNE, the Shibuya livestream institution that's been broadcasting Japanese music and club culture since 2010, something like 5,000 programs and 200 million cumulative viewers deep. The campaign tagline is “The Legend Keeps Spinning,” which is a lot of alliteration for a turntable, but the numbers back it up: the SL-1200 debuted in 1972, over 3.5 million units have shipped since, and it's still the reference point every direct-drive deck gets measured against. The 55th anniversary proper lands in 2027. Technics didn't wait.

Who's Actually on the Decks

Yukimatsu, who performs under the stylised handle ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U, is Osaka by birth and Tokyo by address now, and he's built a reputation on refusing to stay in one genre for more than a few minutes: techno slides into ambient, industrial into pop, without much warning. His 2025 Boiler Room Tokyo set did the numbers that get a DJ noticed outside their own scene, past 5 million views in a month, 10 million by six months, north of 19 million now. He's played Coachella, Primavera Sound, Lollapalooza, Ultra and EDC, and turned up at Berlin's Atonal and inside Berghain, which is not a room that lets just anyone behind its decks. Why It's Worth Watching From Here

Turntable anniversary campaigns have historically leaned on Detroit, Chicago or Berlin names, the cities that get credited with inventing the culture the SL-1200 serves. Technics put a Japanese selector at the centre of this one instead, filmed him in Tokyo rather than flying him to a European capital, and let a Japanese platform co-produce it. That's not nothing for a region that still gets treated as a footnote by the gear brands and the legacy press. Yukimatsu has already played the same festival families whose regional arms show up on our own calendar, Ultra and EDC both run editions that reach Southeast Asian crowds, and a Japanese DJ headlining a global heritage campaign is one more data point that Asian selectors aren't being kept in a regional lane anymore. Worth remembering next time a booking agent tells a Bangkok or Manila promoter that an “international headliner” has to mean someone from Europe.
