Desa Potato Head's Beach Club spent months behind a Rostarr mural wrapping its entire oceanfront facade. On October 16, it throws the wall a day-into-night party, with Eric Duncan and Alex From Tokyo on the lineup.

A Wall Gets Its Own Lineup

For weeks this past July, Desa Potato Head's Beach Club in Seminyak was wrapped in scaffolding, which is usually the least interesting thing a beach club can be wrapped in. Then the scaffolding came down and the entire oceanfront facade was black-and-white calligraphy: diamonds, dripping brushstrokes, a procession of shapes that read, depending on the angle, as Balinese deities or just very confident graffiti. The piece is called Evolving Landscapes, it's by the Brooklyn-based artist Rostarr, and on October 16 the venue is giving it the kind of send-off usually reserved for an album.

Rostarr calls his style "Graphysics," a mash-up of East Asian calligraphy and hard geometry he's been refining across painting, murals and film for more than three decades as a founding member of the Barnstormers collective. For this one he says he went looking for "the vivid culture and people of Bali," working in gods and deities, traditional dancers, and sun and sea worshippers into a pattern language that otherwise looks like nothing from the island at all. It's his biggest wall to date, and it stays up for twelve months before Potato Head recovers the materials, because even the art here comes with a sustainability footnote.

Three Decks, One Beach Club, Midnight and Beyond

The party itself runs the whole day. Music from 3PM to midnight brings Archie, Ryosuke Fukunaga, Yuka Mizuhara, Eric Duncan, Alex From Tokyo and Suze Ijó through the Beach Club, which is a lineup that skews disco and cosmic house rather than anything harder. Duncan is one half of New York's Rub N Tug alongside Thomas Bullock, a name attached to roughly three decades of disco edits and after-hours loft parties in downtown Manhattan. Alex From Tokyo is the rarer booking out here: Paris-born, Tokyo-raised and now Berlin-based, he co-founded the influential A Deep Groove radio show on Paris's Radio FG back in 1993 and has spent the years since running his own label.

Archie isn't a stranger to this particular sound system. He's a KLYMAX resident, the discotheque DJ Harvey built inside the same Potato Head complex, and the night folds straight into that room once the beach program ends. At 5:30PM, Rostarr sits down with Potato Head's creative director Dan Mitchell for a panel at Klymax; at 6:45PM there's an opening ceremony with live gamelan from Bumi Bajra and Putu Septa, followed by projection mapping across the mural itself. Klymax then takes over for a closing set running through Gero, Benedek and Timothy Really Lab, alongside a pop-up capsule collection from the Japanese label nonnative.

For a mural that spent its construction phase looking like scaffolding and tarpaulin, no ticket price is listed on the Megatix page as of this writing. Doors and presale are both live now.
