Ela Minus and Nick León Turned 'What Happened to Our Friends' Into a Three-Track EP

Six minutes and eighteen seconds. That's how long Ela Minus and Nick León spend on the title track of their new EP working through the question in its name: qué les pasó a mis amigos, what happened to our friends. It's not a rhetorical one. Over three songs, the pair sound like they're actually trying to answer it.

qué les pasó a mis amigos? came out digitally on August 7 on Smugglers Way, the Domino-affiliated imprint co-run by León, and it's the first extended collaboration between two artists who'd already circled each other for years. Minus sang on León's Ghost Orchid, off his 2025 debut album A Tropical Entropy. León returned the favor with a remix of QQQQ, from Minus's 2025 album DÍA. This is the record where they stopped trading features and just made something together, three tracks, six mixing credits to Patrick Holland, mastering to Heba Kadry, and a shared production history that started at a meeting in Mexico City in 2024 and finished in Los Angeles this year.

Two Producers, One Instinct

Minus, who builds her entire live show out of modular hardware with no laptop anywhere near the stage, became the first Latin American artist signed to Domino Recording Co back in 2019, and has been the reference point for what a genuinely DIY dance record sounds like ever since. León, a Miami-based DJ-producer Stereogum has called a maker of "dystopian club music," comes at the same instinct from the opposite direction, corroded low end instead of Minus's minimal synth-pop. On record together, that tension resolves into something both artists describe as immediate. "It was so free," León said of the sessions. "There were unspoken understandings of what we wanted to do. That's not normal." Minus put it simpler: "We immediately felt this kinship." Both are of Colombian heritage, and the EP's Spanish title, never translated in the tracklist, is part of the point.

The Same Math, Run Somewhere Else

None of this happened anywhere near Southeast Asia, and this EP isn't going to show up on a Bangkok or Jakarta lineup this year. But the shape of it, two producers with real independent track records taking their time to build one record together instead of chasing a quick feature, is exactly the model this region's own scene keeps running. PNNY spent twelve years throwing Bali's best parties before putting out a single track under her own name. Hajar Asyura built 8110118 in a home studio in Jakarta while scoring horror films by day, then beat the rest of Bandcamp's global chart with it. Minus and León didn't need a major label to tell them their voices belonged together; they needed a bar in Mexico City and eighteen months. That's the same math, just run somewhere else first.

What's Next

A 12-inch vinyl edition arrives later this year, adding remixes from Loidis, Guedra Guedra and Brenda to the three originals. Minus and León will headline Smugglers Way's first label showcase at London's ICA on September 3, alongside Alexis Taylor and Mike Simonetti. No Asia dates have been announced for either artist. For now, the record is streaming everywhere, three songs and eighteen minutes that don't resolve so much as keep moving, which both artists seem to agree is the only honest way to answer their own question.
