PNNY Spent 12 Years Throwing Bali's Best Parties Before Releasing a Single Track

PNNY has been Bali's party more than Bali's band for twelve years now. The collective is credited with throwing one of the island's first Boiler Room sessions, has done it again since, and brought HÖR Berlin's livestream format to Bali for the first time. Until July 3, none of that translated into an actual release. Now it has: a four-track EP called Maria Full of Grace, out on the crew's own PNNY Records.

A Sound System Before It Was a Studio

PNNY (pronounced, and sometimes spelled, Penny) formed in 2014 out of what its own site calls "the island's humid chaos and creative fire." The lineup runs seven deep: TodaysRenaissance, Dubwill, Alex Verdacchi, Andy Chunes, Trigan Young, Equalwho and Daffabedamned, each doubling as DJ, promoter or both. For most of its life the collective has been a curatorial force rather than a production one, the crew you'd credit for getting DJ Koze, Theo Parrish, Octa Octa and Eris Drew through Bali's Basement Love x PNNY series, not for a Beatport chart entry.

That curatorial weight is real. PNNY holds a residency at Desa Potato Head and keeps Luigi's long-running Metto Mondays alive, on top of the La Brisa parties. The Boiler Room connection dates back to a 2019 session with Gerd Janson, ND_Baumecker, Mistral and Tiago Oudman, the poster still doing the rounds as proof the island could host a session that size before most of the current club map existed.

Four Tracks, One Label, No Rush

Maria Full of Grace is short by design: the title track plus "Kissing My Teeth," "Itchin'" and "Giddy Up," pressed through the crew's self-described lane of "love-drenched disco, raw house, and hypnotic techno." It's the first release on PNNY Records, the label arm the collective set up specifically to stop being the island's best party without a discography to point to. Twelve years of curating other people's sets is either the world's longest B-side or the reason this thing actually sounds finished on arrival, and going by the sequencing, it leans toward the latter.

Why a Debut EP Took This Long

Bali's house and techno scene runs almost entirely on imported headliners and a handful of clifftop venues built for tourists first. PNNY's whole reputation is built on the opposite instinct, booking the room, not renting the crowd. A crew that spends over a decade doing that well doesn't necessarily have a reason to also become a production outfit; the two skill sets rarely sit in the same seven people. That Maria Full of Grace exists at all says PNNY wanted a record with their name on it before someone else's algorithm decided their legacy was just a list of parties they once hosted. Whether the EP gets more attention than the next Boiler Room booking remains to be seen, but it's out, on their own terms, on their own label, and it plays like a crew that finally had the studio time to match the guest list.
