Illuzion and Club Seen Just Made DJ Mag's Top 100. Defected Played Both in a Weekend.

On August 7th, Danny Howard and Offaiah played a house set inside a nightclub on Bangla Road, Phuket's strip of buckets of Chang and go-go bars. The next night, on the other coast of Thailand, they played almost the same set again in Koh Samui, this time next to an infinity pool. Both venues had, months earlier, been named among the hundred best clubs on Earth.

Same DJs, Different Coast, One Weekend

Defected's 2026 Asia run bookended itself in Bali, with a Savaya date in July and another on August 21st with Low Steppa, Ferreck Dawn and local support. In between, the tour hit Hong Kong's The 33 on August 20th with Low Steppa, and, a fortnight before that, ran Howard and Offaiah through Illuzion Phuket on the 7th and Club Seen Koh Samui on the 8th. It's an odd pairing on paper: a hyper-produced Patong superclub and a boutique beach club on the other side of the country. Defected didn't pick them at random. DJ Mag's Top 100 Clubs list, published earlier this year, put both on it.

Illuzion Held Its Spot

Illuzion has been Phuket's answer to a mega-club for over a decade: a 6,500-square-metre, three-room complex on Bangla Road with room for 5,000 people, a Funktion-One and L-Acoustics rig in the main room, and enough LED screen and pyrotechnics to make a stadium show blush. Its own Instagram bio claims Thailand's number one club for eleven years running, the kind of line a venue says about itself right up until an outside source backs it up. This one did: DJ Mag ranked Illuzion 9th in the world in 2025 and held it there again in 2026, a non-mover in a list where most positions swing by double digits year to year. Away from the confetti cannons in the main room, Illuzion's smaller Shelter space runs underground techno and minimal after 2am, the part of the building most of the Bangla Road crowd upstairs never bothers to find.

Club Seen Wrote Itself In

Club Seen is younger and considerably smaller: 3,500 square metres on Chaweng Beach, two turquoise infinity pools, an outdoor DJ booth and a 2,000 capacity, built around the day-to-night format that beach clubs from Bali to Ibiza have been chasing for years. It relaunched its programming this year with Defected and Glitterbox showcases plus headline sets from ARTBAT and Nina Kraviz, and DJ Mag rewarded it with a debut entry at number 52, the only Koh Samui venue on the entire list. New entries don't get the benefit of the doubt an established name does. Fifty-second in the world, on a first attempt, is not a small thing for a club that spends its mornings serving cocktails to people who have no idea a DJ is coming later.

Thailand's Bigger Picture

Zoom out and the pattern holds. DJ Mag's own list puts at least six Thai clubs in this year's Top 100: Illuzion at 9, Café Del Mar Phuket at 37, Atlas Superclub in Bangkok at 50, Club Seen at 52, World House in Pattaya at 58 and The Club Khaosan at 71. No other country in Southeast Asia comes close to that spread, and it lands the same year EDC Thailand confirmed its December lineup for a return to Phuket and Tomorrowland's first Thai edition is scheduled for the same month. None of that makes Thailand a house and techno capital instead of an EDM one, and it would be dishonest to pretend Bangla Road has suddenly turned moody and minimal. It hasn't. But a UK house label routing its Asia tour through two Thai islands instead of going straight to Bali, where Savaya still sits above all of them at number five, is its own kind of vote.

Nobody at Defected has said whether the tour comes back in 2027. Both clubs are already booking their next season regardless of what the list says next year, which is probably the healthier way to think about a ranking: nice to have, not the reason the doors open.
