The Final Round

The genre's story began in 2010, when Sherwin Tuna, who performs as DJ Love, started layering jeepney horns and animal sounds over off-beat basslines. Budots has since gone from Davao City's jeepneys to national virality on Philippine TikTok, and on to international stages like Boiler Room.

That sound just closed out a streetwear campaign. OXGN, a Philippine streetwear brand, has released the October drop of "The Final Round," the last of three drops in its 2026 campaign.

The campaign launched in August under the banner "Local Sound. Global Recognition. Streetwear Expression.", rolling out across August, September and October. It draws on Amekaji, the Japanese interpretation of American casual style: relaxed silhouettes, camouflage prints and textured fabrics across both men's and women's lines.

"We wanted to show that Filipino streetwear can stand confidently beside global style movements while still staying close to the people it was made for," says Cathleen Cotioco, OXGN's Brand Director.

A Tribute Track, Not Just a Tee

The campaign opened with a promotional video set to 'TIW TIW 2025,' a budots and hip hop fusion track by Sgamo and Jarreau Vandal, built specifically as a tribute to DJ Love and budots' Davao roots.

Jarreau Vandal, born Ellroy Jarreau Uyleman, is a Dutch producer who blends R&B, hip hop, funk, house and electronic music with global influences, particularly South African and Moroccan rhythms. He started producing music at 16, after his grandfather introduced him to the software. He joined the Los Angeles collective Soulection after they noticed his work in 2014, the same year he put out his debut project, The Jarreau Vandal White Label, and has since played the Amsterdam Dance Event and the Montreux Jazz Festival, and scored commercials for Tommy Hilfiger and Vodafone. Sgamo, the Italian half of the pairing, grew up in Bari's underground rave and free party scene in southern Italy, where he says the music "represents true cultural resistance" and "begins with those who play for passion, not fame." His own sets mix budots with UK garage, baile funk, Jersey club and dancehall.

DJ Love played Manila Community Radio's budots showcase in April 2023, and in August 2024 released his debut album, 'Budots World (Reloaded),' through the London-based label Eastern Margins, a record that folds in newer variants of the genre like bomb-tek. It was his mixes and dance videos, going back years before any of this, that helped define and spread the genre in the first place. Loopliner has covered his rise before.

What the Capsule Says

"The Final Round" puts that trajectory at the center of a retail campaign, bundling Filipino street culture, music and fashion into one release. It's the last capsule of OXGN's 2026 campaign, and it's live now at oxgnfashion.com/collections/the-final-round.
