SAGA Turned a Borrowed Bar on Da Nang's Tourist Strip Into a Central Vietnam Underground Techno Room

Two Romanian brothers took over a friend's bar on Da Nang's tourist strip in 2019 and painted a cat above the stage. Today, SAGA is booking Drumcode's Oscar L and running a dedicated underground techno night in Central Vietnam.

The bar at 4 An Thượng 4 used to belong to a friend of theirs. When two Romanian brothers who'd cut their teeth in Manchester's party scene took it over in 2019, they didn't rename it something aspirational. They painted a cat above the stage and called it SAGA.
Today, that cat still watches the booth, and the room underneath it has turned into a serious underground techno address in Central Vietnam. On July 25, 2026, SAGA booked the Spanish producer Oscar L, a Drumcode and Truesoul regular who has played Tomorrowland, Drumcode Festival and The BPM Festival, for a night Mixmag Asia called one of the venue's biggest international bookings to date. For a bar on a beach town's walking street, five minutes from the sunbeds of My Khe Beach, that's not a small claim.

From a Borrowed Bar to a Cat Shrine
Stefan and Mihai didn't open SAGA chasing Da Nang's beach crowd. The brothers had promoted parties in Manchester before landing in Vietnam, and when a friend's bar on An Thượng walking street came up, they gutted it rather than copy whatever was working two streets over.
"We prefer to call it a music bar with space to dance," Stefan told The Dot Magazine in 2023, explaining why SAGA resisted the word club. Early nights leaned eclectic: a Boogie night built for the city's b-boys, poppers and house dancers, electronic live jams with Mutant Lounge, the occasional hard techno or gabba set for anyone who wandered in off the strip expecting a beer and a sunset.
The cat came from a story Stefan told: a friend who used to run the bar said its spirit animal was a cat, and the painting became the room's signature. SAGA ran with it, a mural above the stage, wood, stone and greenery around the dancefloor. It reads more Berlin basement than Vietnamese beach bar, which is very much the point.
A Room That Picked One Sound
SAGA's current focus is techno and underground electronic music. SAGA's own site now puts it simply: driven by sound rather than trends.
That shift didn't happen by accident. Da Nang's underground has nowhere near Hanoi or Saigon's density of promoters, labels and venues, so a single room that commits to one sound for years starts to matter more than it would in a bigger city. SAGA became that room by just not quitting on it.

Central Vietnam's Biggest Night Yet
Oscar L carries releases on Drumcode, Truesoul, Knee Deep In Sound and Stereo Productions, and a CV that runs through Tomorrowland, Drumcode Festival and The BPM Festival. SAGA ran it as a proper night, 10 PM to 4 AM, with support from Peter Christian and the bar's own RJ, who performs as Future Cat. Mixmag Asia called the booking one of SAGA's biggest to date. For a venue this size, this far from the promoter networks of Hanoi or Saigon, that's probably an understatement.
What Da Nang Still Doesn't Have
SAGA isn't a club, and nobody there pretends otherwise. There's no published capacity, no VIP tables, no light rig built for a room that size. It's a bar with a booth, a mural and a crowd that keeps coming back, sitting in a tourist district where most of the neighboring venues are built around sunset cocktails and karaoke rather than peak-time drums.
A city like Da Nang makes that trade: one committed room instead of a scene with options, and that room has to be good enough to pull international bookings on its own, without a second or third venue nearby to share the work of building an audience. Founded in 2019, SAGA is still at it.
