In Toril, on the southern edge of Davao City, Saturday afternoons sound like a soundcheck that never resolves. Tricycles get rebuilt from the sidecar up, stacked with speaker cabinets taller than the drivers steering them, and roll slow through the street while the neighborhood falls in behind. On November 7, that scene heads indoors, to Apotheka in Manila.

ADM/IT presents GI-BUNAL: A New Wave from Mindanao is a one-night showcase organized by OMK, the Japanese DJ and research collective that curates ADM, short for Asian Dance Music, nights around the region. OMK last played Apotheka a year ago; this time the lineup turns specifically to Mindanao, and to the tricycle sound system scene known locally as busdak.

Busdak, Explained

The driving force behind busdak in Toril is Weng Regotio of Team Lata-Lata Power, who headlines the Manila date alongside DJ Love, the Davao DJ widely credited with inventing budots. Regotio's crew is one of several in Davao that build and race these rigs, more showcar than transport, through residential streets on weekends. It's an unlikely bridge for a club booking, pulling a scene built for open-air streets into a two-story room with a door policy, but it's exactly the kind of pairing OMK has made its name on.

The Rest of the Bill

Dance showcases come courtesy of Lady Maria of the Camus Girls and SoyMil, known for their synchronized "Side by Side" routine. Rounding out the DJ lineup is Obese.Dogma777, a name Loopliner readers might recognize under an older one. In 2019, as Jorge Wieneke, he built Club Matryoshka, a nightclub with no physical address that existed only inside a private Minecraft server. He stepped away from music for several years afterward, then resurfaced as a co-founder of Apotheka itself. Obese.Dogma777 is also on the November 7 lineup.

OMK's choice to build this particular bill around Toril, rather than around budots' better-known names, says something about where the collective's attention is: not the genre's history, which this site has covered at length, but who's still building something new inside it. OMK's own recent show, a budots-themed exhibition in Seoul, suggests the collective isn't done looking for the next corner of the scene to spotlight.
