Cakeshop turns 14 on October 17, and it's not throwing a quiet one. The Itaewon club is taking over two venues, Cakeshop and Pistil, for a 12-hour stretch running from 6PM to 6AM. Beijing's Bloodz Boi, a pioneer of China's underground rap scene known for his cloud rap style, headlines with a live set.

Behind him: more than 20 DJs, crews and collectives pulled from Seoul's own scene, including Sounds Supply Service, Fiction Seoul, Kimchi Factory Homies, Galactique, SOAR, Darklight and Gwangheungchang.

"Still Independent"

Samuel Swanson, who founded the club and still directs it, kept his answer short when Mixmag Asia asked him to look back on 14 years in Itaewon: "Cakeshop is still independent and we have a deep community and support. This allows us to keep things moving forward musically and be socially and politically active, maintaining an underground countercultural space."

It's a pointed thing to say about a neighborhood where glossy new rooms open and quietly vanish within a few years.

Still the Same Basement

Cakeshop opened in a cozy basement next to Tussa skateshop, a short walk from Noksapyeong Station's Exit 3, and built its name booking international DJs alongside undiscovered Korean talent. The red neon sign over the door is hard to miss, and the club has become, in its own words, the home of the neighbourhood's music scene. Famous foreign artists still stop by whenever they're passing through, and the crowd leans as hard into fashion as it does into the booth. The room itself is small: a narrow stairway drops into a red and black, exposed-concrete basement with a low ceiling that gives it an intimate, properly underground feel, though the dancefloor is bigger than the entrance suggests. The sound has always moved around: house, UK bass, garage, hip-hop, R&B, disco, whatever the week calls for.

A Busy Year Before the Party

The anniversary caps a packed year. Swanson says the club ran a five-city tour across Korea and a nine-city tour across Asia under its label, Carousel Seoul, on top of a recorded-set series called AFTERHOURS and an editorial strand, Notes from Cake.
