Wax Motif Just Dropped A Nuke On Insomniac Records And It Is Called Bite Down He has been sitting on this one for a while. Playing it out. Watching rooms react. Letting it cook. And yesterday, May 29, Danny Chien finally let it go.

Who Wax Motif Is

Danny Chien, born November 20 1984 in Sydney, Australia and based in Los Angeles, California, is better known as Wax Motif, an Australian DJ and record producer whose work has drawn critical acclaim across the dance music world.

He is regarded as a major orchestrator in the G-House sound. With musical influences like R&B, disco, and UK bass, the Australian-born producer brings a unique style to the studio which makes him a highly sought-after producer. That combination of influences is exactly what has always made Wax Motif different from the artists around him. He does not make pure house music or pure bass music or pure hip-hop influenced club music. He makes all of it at the same time and it always works.

His music has made it to the decks and received support from Lee Foss, Dom Dolla, James Blake, John Summit, Solomun, Meduza, MK, FISHER, Chris Lake, CID, Don Diablo, and ZHU. That support list covers every corner of the electronic music world from the deepest underground to the biggest festival main stages. The reason his music works for all of those artists is the same reason Bite Down was already in sets before it had a release date. It is built for dancefloors and nothing else.

Divided Souls Records: The Label He Built

In late 2019, Motif founded his own label Divided Souls Records, which has become a home for his scorching solo originals and exciting collaborations with artists like Diplo, Matroda, AC Slater, 220Kid, Euro Trash, and many others.

His debut album House of Wax, released in 2022, garnered over 33 million streams. The 17-track LP takes listeners on a journey through various house music sub-genres, ranging from meditative and chilled-out vibes to energizing dancefloor anthems.

The fact that Bite Down landed on Insomniac Records rather than his own Divided Souls imprint is significant. Insomniac Records is one of the most respected electronic music labels in North America, home to a roster that covers everything from deep house to hard techno, consistently putting out records that matter across the full spectrum of the scene. Wax Motif choosing Insomniac for this one says something about the ambition behind it.

The Record: What Bite Down Actually Is

The title tells you something. This is not a gentle, melodic, emotional house record. This is a weapon. Something built for the moment in a set when the room is already at peak temperature and you need the thing that takes it one step further.

Wax Motif - Bite Down

Running at 132 BPM in Eb Minor, Bite Down sits firmly in tech house territory while carrying the hip-hop-influenced groove and swagger that has always defined the Wax Motif sound. The DNA of his work has always been that crossover between club culture and urban music culture and Bite Down carries that forward without compromising either side of the equation.

He played it out before it dropped. It went into sets. People asked what it was. Rooms reacted. That is the oldest and most reliable quality test in the DJ world and Bite Down passed it every time before it ever had a release date attached.

Bite Down by Wax Motif is out now on Insomniac Records. Available on all platforms. If you have been hearing an ID in sets lately and wondering what it was, there is a very good chance this is it. Go listen.
