Bangkok's 808 Festival Just Put 999999999 on the Same Bill as Illenium and W&W

999999999 don't use a laptop. On stage it's two guys, a wall of drum machines and modular synths, and no safety net if a patch cable comes loose mid-set. That's who Bangkok's 808 Festival just booked for its Phase 2 lineup, two nights before W&W drops in with the pyro and the confetti cannons.

A Phase 2 built around hardware

808 Festival dropped its Phase 2 poster on September 4. Phase 1, back in August, was the headline news: Adam Beyer back-to-back Chris Avantgarde, plus Argy, Illenium, W&W, Ben Nicky, Ian Asher, Mary Droppinz and Rivo (we covered that announcement here). Phase 2 fills in around it: 999999999, Giorgia Angiuli, Doriann, Justus, Kaaze, Mesto and Nifra back-to-back Will Atkinson. The poster says more names are still coming.

999999999 is the one worth stopping on. The Italian duo formed in 2016 and built a reputation on a specific promise: everything you hear is being played live, on hardware, in the room, with no laptop and no pre-recorded backing. Their breakout track, “300000003,” came out on Planet Rhythm in 2018 and, in their own telling, “caught a viral wave.” Since then they've played Awakenings, Fabric in London, Fabrik in Madrid, Fuse in Brussels and CRSSD in San Diego, on a label they run themselves, NineTimesNine. Their own bio calls it music where “the immediacy of uncompromising machine music collides with the unpredictability of improvisation.” At an EDM festival built on drops and confetti timing, that's a genuinely different proposition: a set that could, in theory, fall apart in front of 100,000 people.

Giorgia Angiuli is the other name that separates this poster from a straight EDM bill. She's been playing melodic techno for about four years, after growing up around musicians and starting out on guitar, and her live show changes shape every time: keyboards, drum pads, a theremin, modified kids' toys, whatever's on hand that night. She's never played a DJ set in her career, by her own account. It's a strange thing to book for a room that also has W&W's laser show on the same weekend, and that's exactly why it's worth noting.

Not the first time, but a pattern now

808 has booked techno before. Last year's edition, December 5-7 at the same venue, had Charlotte de Witte and Reinier Zonneveld on the bill alongside Dom Dolla. What's different this time is the shape of the booking: not a headline techno star slotted in for crossover appeal, but a hardware-only duo and a genre-agnostic live artist, both acts that would be just as at home in a 500-capacity room as a stadium tent. It lines up with a run of bookings across the region this year: Sara Landry just confirmed back-to-back Kuala Lumpur and Singapore dates, and Bangkok's own Mustache and Subwerk reopened this month with a dedicated hard techno floor. Thailand's underground has been getting louder for a while. 808 booking it into a mainstage slot is the mainstream noticing.
