Beat Boat Bali and Bangkok Island Are Southeast Asia's Real House and Techno Boat Parties

Bali's Beat Boat and Bangkok's Bangkok Island keep Southeast Asia's boat party scene on the water.

Most of Southeast Asia's house and techno scene happens on land, in a room with a sound system bolted to the walls. Two cities do it differently. Off Bali's southern coast, a 4-hour sunset cruise called Beat Boat leaves Benoa Harbour twice a week with a DJ booth on deck instead of a wall. On Bangkok's Chao Phraya, a 300-guest vessel named Bangkok Island turns its main deck into a floating club. Singapore had one back in 2016. It doesn't have one now.

This isn't a booze-cruise brochure photo of a catamaran with a Bluetooth speaker. Both boats book real DJs on an actual schedule, and one of Bangkok's regular promoters plays house, deep house and minimal exclusively. What follows is where to find them, what they cost, and why Singapore's own version quietly stopped running.

Bali: Beat Boat Sails Tuesdays and Saturdays, Techno Gets an Occasional Takeover

Beat Boat departs Benoa Harbour, off Jl. Raya Pelabuhan Benoa in Denpasar Selatan, every Tuesday and Saturday for a 4-hour sunset cruise. The boat's own site keeps the details simple: sound, drinks, transport and a swim stop are included, and "different DJs" play each sailing. Beat Boat itself doesn't commit to a genre in writing, beyond promising a different DJ for each sailing. A VVIP lounge (capacity up to 25 guests) runs IDR 1,400,000 per guest; general admission is booked through beatboat.com's own system, which doesn't publish a flat price on the homepage.

One periodic edition, branded "Zen Voyage," split the boat's two decks between techno and house DJs. It isn't part of the regular Tuesday and Saturday rotation, more an occasional special booking than a fixture, so the only way to catch one is to watch Beat Boat's own channels rather than assume it's running on a given week. Bali's land-based scene, covered in our full guide to the island's house and techno clubs, still does most of the heavy lifting; the boat is a sunset detour from it, not a replacement.

Bangkok: Bangkok Island Runs Almost Every Week, Including a Halloween Calendar

Bangkok Island is a tropical event boat and riverside venue on the Chao Phraya River. Its own calendar splits the boat into a Main Deck for electronic acts, an indoor hall for live music and harder genres, and a dock stage for silent disco. As of this writing, its schedule runs Golden Hour Society and Thai Roots on the River on October 29 (both free), two Halloween editions on October 31 (Ghost Boat, running into the early hours of November 1, and the Black Pearl Party, ฿600 and up), Sounds of the Underground on November 6, and a New Year's Eve sailing on December 31 (฿2,500 and up).

The clearest house night this research found comes from Resonate, a UK-expat collective that plays house, deep house and minimal exclusively and has described its own nights as "part floating rave, part love letter to the city." Its last confirmed sailing ran November 29, from 3pm to midnight, tickets ฿500 to 650 in advance or ฿800 at the door. Check bangkokisland.com's own event list for Resonate's next date before planning a trip around it specifically. For the city's land-based rooms, our Bangkok club guide covers where the rest of the scene actually lives.

Singapore Had the Original, and Quietly Let It Go

Before either of the above existed, Singapore had its own house and techno boat party. The Council is the warehouse-party crew founded in 2016 by Eileen Chan of CATS ON CRACK and Clement Chin. The crew partnered with music site Bandwagon on "Sunrise on the Bandwagon Riverboat," an all-night house and techno session aboard what both billed as Southeast Asia's only Mississippi Riverboat. Multiple editions ran dusk till sunrise, with local and touring selectors trading sets aboard the boat. The most recent edition this research could trace dates to 2017. No newer one, and no replacement series, turned up anywhere. Singapore's own public-drinking curfew (the Liquor Control Act bans it islandwide from 10:30pm to 7am) may be part of why nobody has picked the format back up since.

What's Not on This List

Ho Chi Minh City has had individual party-boat nights come and go (Saigon Sensation, Castaway), but none turned up as a currently running, recurring series with a verifiable house or techno booking. Manila, Phuket, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur turned up nothing with a comparable structure at all, either no party boats, or boats that run as generic sunset cruises with a playlist rather than booked DJs. If a reader knows of one, it isn't findable through the operators' own channels as of this research.

FAQ

Is there an actual boat party scene for house and techno in Southeast Asia?

Yes, but it's concentrated in two cities. Bali's Beat Boat sails twice a week with rotating DJs, and Bangkok's Bangkok Island hosts a house, deep house and minimal night under the Resonate name, alongside its wider weekly calendar.

How much does Beat Boat Bali cost?

General admission is booked through beatboat.com's own system. A VVIP lounge (capacity up to 25 guests) costs IDR 1,400,000 per guest.

Does Bangkok still run boat parties on the Chao Phraya?

Yes. Bangkok Island hosts events through the year, including Halloween, New Year's Eve and recurring electronic nights on its Main Deck. The last confirmed sailing for its house-specific Resonate nights ran November 29, from 3pm to midnight.

What happened to Singapore's boat party scene?

Sunrise on the Bandwagon Riverboat was organized by Bandwagon, in conjunction with The Council. Its last traceable house and techno edition, billed as "our third outing," ran on April 14, 2017. No operator has revived the format since. Singapore's public-drinking curfew, which bans it islandwide from 10:30pm to 7am, may be part of why.

Are these boats only for electronic music?

No. Both Beat Boat and Bangkok Island book a range of genres across the year, from afrobeats to hip-hop to silent disco. House and techno fans should check each operator's specific lineup before booking rather than assume every sailing fits the genre.
