A Festival Born From a Different Vision

Few gatherings in the global electronic music landscape have earned the kind of reverence that Sunwaves Festival commands. Founded in 2007 as a direct response to the direction mainstream festivals were heading, the event was built on a deliberate rejection of spectacle, placing the music and its community at the centre of everything. There were no fireworks, no laser shows, no crowd pleasing drops designed for viral moments. What Sunwaves offered instead was something far more compelling: extended DJ sets, open air beachside stages, and a sound rooted in the deepest underground house and minimal techno traditions Europe had to offer.

Now in 2026, the festival enters what many are calling its most transformative year yet, with two editions spanning multiple countries and a renewed sense of purpose following significant changes to its long running home base.

Two Editions, Two Coastlines, One Identity

Now entering its 19th year, Sunwaves continues to stand as one of the most respected electronic music gatherings anywhere in the world, celebrated for its marathon DJ sets, beachside stages, and an uncompromising commitment to sound.

The spring edition, known as SW37, marks a significant milestone. After 18 years anchored to the Black Sea coast of Romania, the spring edition has crossed one border north along the same coastline. SW37 will be hosted in Golden Sands, Bulgaria, with the event organised by Kristal Club and Sunrise, and described by organisers as a continuation forward with full power, authentic setup, and the energy that only the SW crowd can generate. The dates run from 30 April to 5 May 2026, giving attendees five full days of non stop music along one of Europe's most scenic stretches of coast.

The autumn edition, SW38, tells a different story of expansion. Riding on the warmth of its Mediterranean experience over the past two years, Sunwaves will return to its beloved spot at Las Salinas in Roquetas de Mar, Spain, from 3 to 7 September 2026. Spain has now become the confirmed home for the end of summer editions, with organisers expressing genuine affection for the location and its local authorities.

The Sound That Defines a Scene

To understand why Sunwaves matters to house and electronic music culture, you need to understand the kind of music it champions. The music at Sunwaves does not follow the conventional festival formula. There is no manufactured peak moment every eight bars, no choreographed crowd reaction. The groove sits lower, rewarding patience from the audience, and what plays across the stages is a sound that grew organically out of Bucharest and Cluj Napoca.

This is a festival that has long operated at the intersection of deep house, minimal techno, and what is often referred to as rominimal: a distinctly Eastern European approach to dancefloor music that prizes texture, restraint, and long form narrative over instant gratification. It is a philosophy that has influenced DJs and producers across the world.

The Artists Bringing the Music to Life

The SW37 spring edition will feature five days of non stop performances by internationally renowned artists, , with a lineup that reads like a roll call of underground royalty. Confirmed names include Raresh, Rhadoo, Marco Carola, Loco Dice, Paco Osuna, Marco Faraone, Sonja Moonear, Traumer, Dyed Soundorom, East End Dubs, Archie Hamilton, Mahony, Ilario Alicante, and Priku, among many others still to be announced.

The trio known as RPR Soundsystem, comprising Rhadoo, Petre Inspirescu, and Raresh, have been fixtures at Sunwaves for years. Their deep, hypnotic approach to DJing captures the very soul of the festival, generating a dancefloor atmosphere built entirely on rhythm and groove.

Marco Carola, the Naples born DJ and producer, brings an entirely different but equally compelling energy. Carola is regarded as one of the underground's most commanding figures, known for his ability to move a crowd through instinctive reading of the room and a seamless mixing technique that layers rolling techno, bassline driven house, and tech house rhythms into something genuinely hypnotic. His presence at Sunwaves is always an event within the event.

Loco Dice adds yet another dimension to the bill. His DJ sessions are known for a personal, character driven sound that draws from urban music, hip hop influence, and underground house, making his sets unlike anything else on a festival lineup.

Community First, Always

What separates Sunwaves from virtually every other large scale electronic music event is the relationship it has cultivated with its audience over nearly two decades. The organisers have emphasised that community feedback directly shapes the lineup and festival design, with the goal of delivering the most original experience possible for those who make the journey.

Returning attendees from the previous spring edition are set to receive their festival passes as a direct fulfilment of a promise made by organisers, a gesture that speaks to the close and trusting bond between the festival and its loyal following. This is not a festival that treats its audience as a revenue stream. It treats them as the reason the whole thing exists.

Why 2026 Is a Year Worth Watching

Sunwaves 2026 arrives at a fascinating crossroads. The festival has outgrown its original home through circumstance rather than choice, and yet it moves forward with a clarity of purpose that few events manage to sustain across nearly 20 years. The organisers have framed SW37 as a form of rebellion, a declaration that the music and community remain the only things that truly matter, regardless of geography.

For anyone serious about house music and its extended musical family, both editions of Sunwaves in 2026 represent essential calendar dates. The beaches may be different, but the frequencies, the dedication, and the dancefloor philosophy remain exactly the same.
