What Is a DJ Residency, Explained: Zouk Singapore's Ghetto Has Held His Since 2010

A residency means the same DJ, the same club, the same night, for years. Zouk Singapore runs the clearest version of it in Southeast Asia, with a roster that spans a 2010 start and a 2025 debut.

Wednesday nights at Zouk Singapore have had the same DJ behind the decks since 2010. His name is Ghetto, and the night he built, a midweek party called TGIW, still fills the room fourteen years later. That is what a residency looks like when it actually holds, and in Southeast Asia's club scene, it is rarer than the word gets used.

What a Residency Actually Is

A DJ residency is a standing arrangement with one venue: the same DJ, playing a fixed night, on a recurring basis, for months or years, rather than a one-off booking. It is the opposite of touring. A guest DJ flies in, plays a single set, and moves on to the next city. A resident shows up every week, builds a crowd that comes back specifically for them, and answers for how the room sounds on a given night.

The modern high end of this is Ibiza, where an entire club's summer can be built around one act. The format works because it buys something a tour date can't: time. A resident gets to experiment over a season instead of justifying a fee in one set.

Most of Southeast Asia's best-known rooms don't book this way. They fly in international names for single dates and fill the rest of the calendar with guest slots, which makes the clubs that do publish a named, dated resident roster worth naming specifically.

Zouk Singapore Runs the Region's Clearest Example

Zouk Singapore, already profiled on this site for cracking DJ Mag's Top 100 Clubs list in 2026, publishes its resident roster directly on its own site.

Krisha joined Zouk Singapore's resident roster in 2024, after residencies at clubs in Shenzhen and Zhanjiang, China. She is currently the only woman on the roster.

Ghetto is the longest-serving, resident since 2010. He built TGIW, the Wednesday night that still packs the venue, and also runs Bulletproof on Fridays in Zouk's Phuture room. Rattle has held his residency since 2019. He was Singapore's DMC champion two years running, in 2004 and 2005, the first Singaporean DJ to take the title. He now curates two in-house nights, Sin City and SLIME. Caden has been resident since 2022. Krisha, resident since 2024, is currently the only woman on the roster, having come up through clubs in Shenzhen and Zhanjiang before Singapore. Gainzter is the newest, resident since 2025, trained through a DJ school called SPDJ under Rattle as well.

That gap between the earliest and newest residencies is the point. A residency roster is a standing bench, not a single headline booking, with newer names learning under the people who've already done the job for years.

Why Most of the Region Doesn't Book This Way

Zouk's isn't the only named residency program in Southeast Asia, but it is one of the few publicly documented ones. In Hanoi, 1900 Le Théâtre ran a series called Resident Revival that put its in-house DJs back in the spotlight instead of touring headliners. Mixmag Asia, which covered the series, named NgoKien, one of Vietnam's pioneering DJs, and Dustee, founder of the label Dusted Recordings and a long-standing resident at the venue, as two of the DJs the series featured.

Elsewhere, the line gets blurry fast. That distinction matters: a DJ who gets booked often is not automatically a resident. A resident is named on the venue's own roster, with a start date attached.

How a Residency Differs From Just Getting Booked

A residency pays less per date than a touring fee, but it trades money for reps. Caden's path from corporate engineer to full-time DJ took him through residencies at two smaller Singapore venues, Space and Suite 36, before Zouk. Rattle's own three-decade run through Singapore clubs, MOS, Smoove, Zirca, Rebel, Capital, is what qualified him to train both Caden and Gainzter. A residency is where most working DJs actually learn the job: reading an unglamorous Tuesday crowd for months, not headlining a festival mainstage for ninety minutes.

It's also the clearest way a club builds an identity that outlasts any single touring booking. Ghetto's Wednesday didn't need an international name to fill the room in year sixteen; it needed the same DJ who built it in year one.

How to Catch a Resident Set

Zouk Singapore lists its current roster and their nights directly on its own site, which is worth checking before you go since residencies do end and lineups shift. As of this writing, Ghetto's TGIW runs Wednesdays, Bulletproof with Ghetto runs Fridays in Phuture, and Rattle's Sin City and SLIME rotate through the week.
